Root Canal Questions and Answers

A toothache is miserable and doesn’t get better on it’s own. Our dentists at the Yuba City Dentistry Group are here to help! We provide a complete exam and quickly determine the best course of treatment for any toothache. If a tooth is excessively decayed and the pulp is infected, or if the tooth has been injured in an accident, a root canal procedure is usually the best way to save the tooth and be pain free once again. Therefore, here are some commonly asked questions our patients have about root canal therapy:

How do you determine if I need root canal therapy?

Our Yuba City dentists examine the affected tooth for discoloration and swelling or tenderness in the gums around the tooth. We will also ask you if you are experiencing extra sensitivity to heat or cold. It is unfortunately possible to need a root canal, yet not have any pain.

What is tooth pulp and how does it get infected?

All teeth have pulp inside them. It is a soft tissue made up of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. A tooth can “die” when the pulp inside it becomes infected after the tooth is broken or cracked. Without prompt treatment, the pus created from the infection builds up, creating an abscess. Abscesses are very painful and may further infect the jaw bone or other roots if there is delay in treatment.

Why does the pulp need to be removed?

Infected pulp should be removed to stop infection and prevent more damage. Without treatment, the pain and swelling increases and the tooth may not be able to be saved.

What does a root canal procedure involve?

Our Yuba City dental professionals usually treat an infection right away and complete the procedure in one to three visits. During the first visit, the dentist removes the infected pulp from the tooth, cleans the pulp chamber and root canal of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent further infection. This usually relieves toothache pain and discomfort. Follow-up visits place a permanent fix on your tooth, usually a crown or overlay.

How long does the repaired tooth last?

A repaired tooth can last a lifetime! If the patient has a good daily oral care routine and visits the Yuba City Dentistry Group twice a year for cleanings and exams, the restored tooth should enjoy a long life.

Will the tooth need any special care or additional treatment?

After your root canal procedure, be careful not to bite or chew on the treated tooth until it has recovered. Our Yuba City dentists will also provide you with more information on after care immediately after your procedure.

So if you have a toothache, get help immediately! The sooner you get emergency dental assistance, the more likely you are to save your tooth. If needed, root canal treatment is an excellent way to keep your original teeth.
