Getting Children to Care for Their Teeth

A parent’s job never ends, but during the morning rush or at the end of a busy day it’s easy to forget the kids need to brush their teeth. So how can we teach our kids that brushing and flossing is important? The Yuba City family dentists at our dental group have some tips to share to make brushing an enjoyable daily habit for kids and parents alike.

Visit the Dentist at an Early Age

It used to be that the recommended age for the first dental visit was five years old. That recommendation has changed and according to both the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, that first visit is now at age one to two. Why so young? It not only helps a toddler to be comfortable with the dentist, but this is also primetime for the first teeth to come in. Our dentists provide parents with valuable tips and information on teething and how to take care of their little one’s new “tools.” The first appointment might not be a long one, but it establishes trust between the dentist and child so they learn that going to the dentist isn’t scary.

Toothbrushes — Tools and Toys

While toothbrushes serve a vital function, they can also be fun. Children love electric toothbrushes because they buzz, light up and vibrate, all at the touch of a button. If an electric brush motivates your child to want to brush, by all means use one! Even better, take them to the store and let them pick it out. Choose a child friendly one so that the brush size fits their mouth and the settings are simple. While you’re at it, let them also choose their toothpaste. Toothpastes for children come in flavors other than mint, which some kids find too strong tasting. This is one occasion where bubblegum flavor is actually a good thing for teeth!

Never Too Young To Start Flossing

Training kids to floss is a bit more challenging than brushing. Training with the right technique teaches them that flossing isn’t painful and traumatic. Traditional floss might be a bit hard for a youngster to master, so flossers wands are a good alternative. These child-friendly tools are easy to hold and get in between teeth. The first few times your child uses them, supervise so you know they’re doing it right.

Make Oral Care a Family Affair!

Children learn best by example, so let them see you brushing and flossing every day. Make visiting the dentist a positive experience to establish good habits for life. By doing this you’ll have great little brushers with healthy teeth. Ask the Yuba City Dental Group for your little one’s first appointment or contact us with questions about family dental care. We are here to help!
