February is National Children’s Dental Health Month

“Defeat Monster Mouth” is the theme for Children’s Dental Health Month, sponsored by the American Dental Association (ADA). The Yuba City Dentistry Group supports the ADA’s goal for all children to have quality dental health by educating them early about the benefits of taking care of their teeth to defeat plaque. The very first step to be successful is this: “Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth for a healthy smile.” Children (and adults) following this rule save their teeth from cavities and decay. Gingivitis, the beginnings of gum disease, is a common childhood problem that is easily avoided. And a good daily routine also leads to better health and decreases the chance of experiencing other chronic health conditions.

Parents Do Your Part

Take good care of your baby’s teeth as soon as they come in. These little teeth need daily care! Clean them by wiping with a soft, clean cloth every day before bedtime. Avoid “baby bottle mouth” by not allowing your baby to fall asleep with their bottle. If they need the bottle to sleep, offer only water at bedtime. Provide a baby toothbrush for them to chew on so they are accustomed to how it feels. Introduce a dab of children’s fluoride toothpaste on the brush at two years old for extra protection.

Teach your children that oral hygiene is enjoyable by brushing and flossing with them everyday! If you like to do it, they will do it too! It is true that baby teeth are replaced by permanent teeth, starting at around fives years old, but this doesn’t mean it’s not important to take care of the first set of teeth. If a child has bad habits when they are young, it’s very hard to start  following good habits once their permanent teeth come in.

Schedule the First Dental Visit

When children are not afraid of visiting the dentist, they are less likely to avoid the dentist as adults. Your child’s first visit should be scheduled between one to two years old. This short, yet important, visit helps your child feel comfortable in the dental chair. Our friendly staff shows them our dental tools and explains what to expect in terms they understand. Our Yuba City family dentist also provides parents with practical help regarding daily brushing and flossing techniques. Parents who take care of their teeth and visit the dentist twice a year teach their children that oral care is beneficial for health and well-being. This becomes especially important once children are teenagers, because sugar consumption and snacking tends to spike at this age, along with cavities and gum disease.

So defeat “Monster Mouth” as a family and prevent plaque from winning the battle against dental health! Contact our Yuba City dental clinic to schedule an appointment today!
