Have a Stress Free Dental Appointment!

It’s normal to have some anxiety right before a dental appointment. Even a regular exam and cleaning makes some patients feel as if they have “test anxiety.” Don’t worry! Our Yuba City dentist and hygienists are not here to judge or compare you to other patients, but we do have some practical suggestions to make your visit a bit less stressful.

Plan Ahead

If possible, have an hour gap between your next obligation after your dental appointment. Sometimes, issues like a cavity are discovered at an exam. If you have the time, we can resolve the issue immediately instead of scheduling another appointment for later.

Besides planning for the unexpected, it’s also a good idea to make sure you have child care arrangements during your dental appointment. We love kids and are a family dental practice, but children are not allowed in the exam room with you during your appointment. If they cannot stay in the waiting room alone, then it is best to make a plan for them to be taken care of ahead of time.

Brush, Floss and Mouthwash

Before you leave for your appointment, brush, floss and use mouthwash so your mouth is a “clean slate.” Even though you’re coming in for a cleaning, our Yuba City dental hygienist appreciates fresh breath. Your cleaning and exam will be shorter and more effective when you brush and floss before arrival.

If You Are Especially Anxious

It’s not uncommon for some patients to use alcohol to calm their nerves before a dental appointment. The Yuba City Dentistry Group does not recommend this. If you have a fear of the dentist and need to relax, consider sedation dentistry as a safe and effective alternative. And especially do not drink alcohol ahead of your appointment if you already plan to use oral sedation! Where alcohol and sedatives are combined, there is a strong possibility of a drug interaction that is not to your benefit!

The most important thing is that you that you come in and keep your appointment! No matter what your dental condition is, regular exams and cleanings are the best way to keep a wise eye on your mouth. We understand that life can be stressful and people miss appointments or don’t have a chance to brush before they arrive. No matter what your condition when you come in, your teeth will look and feel better when you walk out! Call or contact our Yuba City family dental practice today to schedule an appointment.
