Signs You Brush Too Hard

Our teeth and gums need to be brushed and flossed twice a day using a soft bristle brush. It’s ideal to brush and floss after eating all meals and snacks, but many people aren’t in a position to do that, so twice a day is considered sufficient. But what if you forget to brush? Should you brush extra hard the next time to make up for it? No — oral care doesn’t work that way! Brushing hard does more harm than good! Instead, brush as soon as you remember, using the same careful, gentle and small circular motions that you should always use when brushing your teeth. Do so for two minutes to get your teeth the cleanest.

Signs You Brush Your Teeth Too Hard

Here are some ways you can recognize if you, a friend or a loved are brushing too hard:How to Brush - Old Toothbrushes

  • the toothbrush handle bends when you brush,
  • the bristles on the toothbrush are quickly bent out of shape,
  • using a hard or medium bristle brush,
  • the teeth actually start to look worn under examination,
  • sore or receding gums without associated signs of bacterial infection.

Feel free to ask our Yuba City family dentist if you are using the correct brushing and flossing techniques. An examination of your teeth and gums will tell us if we see signs of abrasion and enamel loss. We can also watch your technique during a dental visit and let you know if you need any improvement to preserve your teeth and gums from premature wear. Call or use our online form to schedule an appointment today!
