Dental Extraction Tools

Pulling the Tooth, the Whole Tooth and Nothing But the Tooth

With the skills, procedures, and technologies available today, it’s increasingly rare that the Yuba City Dentistry Group needs to pull a tooth from a patient’s mouth. If a tooth becomes infected, then root canal procedures allow the tooth to stay in place while still removing the infection. If teeth are crowded, orthodontics reposition them into better alignment. Receding gums are now addressed with the Pinhole Surgery Technique (or PST), strengthening the grip of the gums and bones on your teeth.

Rare as they may be, there are a few circumstances that still call for tooth removal. For instance, a severe accident or other dental trauma could involve removing a tooth for the patient’s health. Extensive decay might require extraction. Insufficient space in the jaw, as with impacted wisdom teeth, requires permanent removal. Nevertheless, if the need arises to remove a tooth, the Yuba City Dentistry Group has specialized tools to help make the procedure as efficient, successful, and painless as possible.

“Wake Me Up After It Go-Goes”

The mere thought of pulling a tooth from a person’s mouth is enough to make some patients uneasy. For many, knowing they are about to go through the procedure spikes their anxiety level. With modern sedation techniques, our patients relax and breathe easy. Sedation methods are often called “sleep dentistry,” and rightfully so. Patients “sleep” through the entire extraction procedure, ensuring they have no memory of it and less of the pain caused by tension during the procedure.

The Hardware for Tooth-Pulling

Nearly all extraction procedures involve just two different tools: elevators and forceps.

Elevators – an elevator in a building lifts people up and down from one floor to another. A dental elevator is a hand-held lever that acts similarly, lifting a tooth out of its socket. They come in various shapes and sizes, but they are all designed for the same function.

Dental forceps – whether in the medical or dental field, forceps are varied models of broad pincers, tweezers or pliers designed to grasp an item. Dental forceps allow your dentist to take firm hold of the crown and maneuver the tooth out of the socket.

Using the forceps together with the dental elevator allows for safe, controlled separation of the tooth from the tissues attached to it. Ripping the tooth out with string or ordinary pliers in a “do-it-yourself” job usually results in excessive bleeding and unnecessary damage to the surrounding tissues, and even the jawbone itself.

Every Mouth is Different

All teeth, sockets, jaws, and even gum tissue connections have their own individual shapes, densities and configurations. Any of these factors could make the procedure easier or more complicated. Even so, your dentist performs a proper examination beforehand to make sure the process is painless and successful. Afterward, restoration dentistry replaces any missing teeth, bringing back your smile with the help of bridges, dentures, or dental implants.

The Yuba City Dentistry Group makes sure we use the right tools for the right job! If you have a problem tooth or teeth, give us a call or schedule an appointment online. We’re glad to discuss any of our dental tools and procedures with you.
