It’s important to visit the Yuba City Dentistry Group regularly, at least every six months. There are several reasons for this. Regular checkups allow us to inspect your teeth and gums, making sure they are healthy. If any issues have developed, we can assess the situation immediately. If you recently had dental work done, like a crown or filling, we make sure the work is holding up.
Another benefit to regular dental checkups is the routine cleaning of your teeth, called prophylaxis. Sure, brushing twice a day and flossing daily is important, absolutely. But the average American diet and the bacteria in your mouth work together to create plaque buildup. Over time, the plaque eventually becomes tartar. Tartar is very tough to remove, and is one of the major causes of gingivitis, or gum disease.
Dental Checkup Procedures
No toothbrush in the world can remove all tartar safely. For that, you need professional tools and skills. (For example, looking in a mirror and moving your hands in the right direction for cleaning the teeth!) Thankfully, the Yuba City Dentistry Group has all of these! At your regular visit, you receive a routine cleaning of each and every tooth, to get rid of any plaque and tartar.
We also check for any signs of oral cancer. Oral cancer is a serious illness, and the odds of surviving it increase dramatically when it’s caught early. In many cases we use the VEL Scope as part of the exam. This instrument uses natural tissue fluorescence to enhance any signs of oral cancer, and also viral, bacterial, or fungal infections that are not visible to the naked eye. A VEL Scope examination only takes about two minutes to complete, does not use radiation, and is perfectly safe. Indeed, the VEL Scope contributes to your safety by helping us see lesions we might not see otherwise!
Finally, we polish your teeth. This is not just a cosmetic treatment, for polishing removes stains, or any dislodged bits of plaque, that still remain. It leaves your teeth fresh and clean. We can also rinse your teeth with a fluoride mixture to reinforce your tooth enamel.
