Gentle Sedation Options
Children deserve dental care that feels calm, safe, and reassuring — for them and their parents. At the Yuba City Dentistry Group, we work closely with families to create positive dental experiences, especially when oral surgery is necessary. One important part of that process involves choosing the right sedation method. With the right option, children stay relaxed, procedures go smoothly, and parents feel at ease.
Tailored Sedation Choices
Some children benefit from oral sedation — a small pill taken at the office before treatment begins. This option gently eases anxiety and helps patients stay relaxed throughout the visit. Even dental cleanings or filling procedures are “less scary” with this type of medical support, especially for children with strong dental anxiety.
Another common type of sedation is nitrous oxide. Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide delivers calm within minutes. After a few deep breaths through a small mask, children enter a dream-like state. They are still awake and responsive, but largely unaware of the work being done. They do not feel discomfort, and instructions like “turn your head” or “open a little wider” remain easy to follow.
Throughout any sedation procedure, our team carefully monitors your child’s vital signs. Once a procedure with nitrous oxide is over, oxygen naturally flushes out any remaining laughing gas. Your child is back to full awareness within a few minutes.
Before and After Sedation
We believe informed parents make the best decisions. Therefore, we take the time to explain every step of the dental treatment process and answer all of your questions. After any procedure, we share guidelines to follow at home. In many cases, we can refer to information right here on our website to help you manage after care. After treatment, children may feel drowsy, emotional, or slightly nauseous. We ask parents to stay close as their child wakes up. Extra rest, soft foods, and recommended pain relief support healing, especially after oral surgery or wisdom teeth removal. School may need to wait a day or two, and we can provide a “doctor’s note” if needed.
