Invisalign and Oral Cysts

The Yuba City Dentistry Group prefers to use Invisalign when straightening teeth for our patients. These clear plastic aligners are proven to effectively straighten teeth without the use of traditional braces. Some people have questioned, however, whether Invisalign causes cysts to form in the mouth.

The short answer is no, there is no documentation of Invisalign causing cysts. While some orthodontic treatments may cause pseudocysts to form, Invisalign does not. For example, if an orthodontic appliance is attached near the floor of the mouth, there is a small chance that a salivary gland may rupture or be damaged. When this happens, saliva may not be able to reach the mouth, so the fluid instead flows under the surrounding tissue, creating a pseudocyst. This pseudocyst or ranula requires oral surgery to repair.

Invisalign does not attach via screws, like some traditional orthodontics. It is always removable and attaches to the crowns of the teeth only, and not below the gumline, so it cannot form pseudocysts. In short, Invisalign aligners create better smiles without the need for braces or invasive procedures that scare many patients.

If you think you have an oral cyst or a ranula caused by traditional orthodontics, we encourage you to please contact the Yuba City Dentistry Group for assistance. Visiting our Yuba City dentist regularly is the best way to preserve your smile and keep your whole mouth healthy!

I haven’t actually had anything done yet, however everyone seems to be friendly and professional. I’m scheduled to have teeth pulled next week. I hope it all goes well so I can write a good review. But so far so good!Well I went in to have some extractions. And I have never been more nervous in my life, bc there was a lot that needed to be taken out. But first, the staff assured me there was nothing to fear. Then the doctor came in and started giving me shots. Which in the past doctors have hurt me bad, but the doctor took his time and there was hardly any discomfort. And before he did any extractions he felt around and made sure nothing was felt. It's the first time a dentist has done that. I was extremely impressed. I will go to this dentist for the rest of my life. Thx Rich
