Vitamins For Oral Health

In our last article, we discussed the dark side of gummy vitamins and why they can adversely effect dental health. If you choose to take a vitamin, the Yuba City Dental Group recommends taking a chewable or pill vitamin, instead of sugary gummies. But what are the best vitamins for oral health?

Your Diet and Oral Health

A varied diet of whole foods (not packed or processed foods) with lots of fruits and vegetables is the best way to get vital nutrients to support your body and oral health. Strong gums and healthy teeth especially need six specific vitamins and minerals.

The Stellar Six For Oral Health

Vitamin A

Vitamin A keeps mouth and gums healthy by supporting mucous membranes and saliva flow. It also supports proper healing. Fish, egg yolks and organ meats contain vitamin A, as does any fruit or vegetable that is orange or yellow — like carrots and mangos. Dark leafy greens are a good source as well, so eat lots of kale and spinach!

B Vitamins

Beans, poultry and green vegetables contain B vitamins. Vegetarians may need to take a vitamin B12 supplement to get the full benefit of this nutrient. B vitamins reduce inflammation and prevent canker sores.

Vitamin C

Probably the best known vitamin and the most popular, it supports the immune system by reducing inflammation and repairing connective tissue. Go without it for too long and you get bleeding gums and scurvy! Berries, oranges, kale and broccoli are all high in vitamin C.

Vitamin D

Without vitamin D, our bodies cannot absorb calcium well, and that’s an important component of both jawbones and teeth. Dairy products, cod liver oil and simply getting some sun (a minimum of twenty minutes) are all good ways to get more vitamin D.

Calcium

Getting enough calcium in our diet prevents weak bones and loose teeth. Leafy greens, cauliflower, almonds and fortified orange juice or soy milk all contain calcium. Prevent chipped or loose teeth by getting enough calcium in your daily diet. One important thing to note: Caffeine consumption has been linked to calcium depletion.

Coenzyme Q10

Pork, beef, and chicken liver as well as canola and soybean oil contain coenzyme Q10. It helps to promote healing and decreases painful bleeding from gum disease. Parsley also contains coenzyme Q10, with the extra benefit of giving you fresh breath if you eat it!

The Yuba City Dentistry group knows there’s no replacement for a healthy diet — you look your best and feel better by being sure to include these vitamins and nutrients in a varied daily diet. This office is the only dentist I've been to that actually listened to me when I said I wasn't numb yet and gave me as many shots and took as much time as needed for me to actually be numb. The staff are all super friendly as well!
