Tips for Reluctant Dental Patients

Do you dislike going to the dentist? You are not alone! Fear of pain, needles, and dental probes are not uncommon. You know that your dental health is important, and you want to do what you can to protect it, but sitting in that dental chair for a routine checkup feels excruciating. We understand and we want to help! Let’s discuss a few key things you can do in order to reduce your fear and anxiety.

Reducing Fear and Anxiety

First find a dentist you are relatively comfortable visiting. (You can read more about how to choose a dentist here.) Your first appointment with a new dentist should be a consultation to discuss treatment options. Communicate openly about your fears or anxieties. This provides the dental team with the opportunity to suggest adjustments to procedures in order to accommodate your specific needs. This consultation helps build trust and understanding between you and your dentist.

Ensure you sleep a healthy amount the night before your procedure and are properly hydrated. It is also wise to schedule the appointment in the morning so you don’t worry all day about your procedure. On the day of your scheduled procedure, consider bringing a friend or family member to offer positive support. Having someone familiar with you on the drive to the appointment and in the waiting room helps calm and reassure you.

Many patients find that relaxation techniques contribute to a calm mindset. Breathing exercises, meditation, muscle relaxation, visualization, or tapping are some techniques to consider. In addition, distractions such as listening to your favorite music, audio books, or podcasts may be an option during your scheduled procedure.

During your consultation, medication prior to the procedure may be considered as part of your plan. A short-acting anxiety medication is typically taken at least one hour before your visit. If not prescribed by the dental team, be sure to communicate that you have taken something prior to your visit so that they can ensure that it will not negatively impact your treatment.

Lastly, you and your dentist may decide on sedation. There are several types of sedation to consider. You can read more about sedation dentistry options here. Your dentist wants you to be well-informed and comfortable with your choice in sedation. Be sure to ask any questions that you may have regarding this type of care.
